Today we had an early appointment at the Accademia to meet a young man named David, and saw some amazing paintings and sculpture along the way. (“Amazing” is an understatement and doesn’t begin to do justice to their collection.) (San Lorenzo District, Tuscany, Italy)
We arrived in Florence yesterday in late afternoon, due to a delayed train. (Italy is great, but they could learn a few things from the Swiss about running a train system!) Only had time to walk to the Duomo.
Overheard from another tourist in Piazzale Michelangelo: “It’s the David! The fake David!” (Oltrarno, Tuscany, Italy)
Enjoying a view of the Duomo and the Florentine skyline with Heather. (Oltrarno, Tuscany, Italy)
Assisi is crowded with pilgrims and day trippers by day, but it’s lovely and quiet at night. (Assisi, Umbria, Italy)
Turns out we dodged a bullet. We’re in Assisi on Oct 2. The feast of St Francis is on Oct 4. If we had arrived two days later, the city would be filled with a crowd of 10,000 pilgrims. Even today there were lots of AV and television crews setting up for the big celebration.
