But even after deleting most apps, we still had to spend a lot of time on the basics: How to unlock the phone. How to place a phone call. How to find punctuation on the keyboard. I really wish iOS had an “easy mode” as an accessibility feature to pare the phone back to basics.

My first step was to delete as many apps as I could to leave her with just the basics: phone, texting, camera, maps, & weather. (The Weather app is the killer feature for her, btw. Weather forecasts at her fingertips!)

I’ve had an interesting challenge the last few days. I gave my mom an old iPhone SE. This is her first smartphone, so I’ve been trying to teach her how to use it. I forgot how unintuitive a lot of the iPhone gestures are to someone who doesn’t already know them!

Experimenting with my Dad on a scone recipe we were given in Dingle, Ireland in 2016. Biggest discovery so far: The bakery “neglected” to specify how much buttermilk to use and failed to list salt as an ingedient at all. So we’re improvising! (Barbee, IN)
