People of Ireland and Britain: What size is a proper scone? I made mine about the size of an American biscuit (2 3/4 inch diameter), but it made fewer than was indicated by the Irish recipe I’m using. Clearly mine are bigger than the recipe expected. So what’s the usual size?

I don’t use any AWS services, but I may start using SES for email. How confusing / how much of a pain is it to set up SES someone who has no experience with AWS?

Anyone have a recommendation for a good book or resource to learn more about modern system administration for Linux? I know the basics and need something intermediate level. Looking for topics like Redis, containers, managing deployments, and tuning Apache, PHP-FPM and MySQL.

What services should I look at for server downtime alerts? I know about Pingdom. What other services are good? My needs are simple, but must have email & SMS alerts. I’m looking for a paid service.

What helped me get over my uneasiness with self-promotion was becoming confident that my product is good and solves a real need. When I talk about my product to someone in my target market, I’m actually *helping* them. Not talking about it would be doing them a disservice. 2/2

I’ve noticed (again) recently a lot of indies/bootstrappers saying that they feel “dirty” or “slimy” when promoting their products. I get it. I used to feel that way too. 1/2

I might have finally tracked down the cause of some periodic web server outages. They seem connected to my nightly backup jobs. I added a few ‘nice’ commands to the backup scripts so they give up CPU cycles to Apache. More testing is needed, but I think I’m on the right track.
