Scotland 2023
Posts from our trip to Scotland from September 12-22, 2023. Heather and I took Heather’s parents on an itinerary that included Oban, the Isle of Iona, the Isle of Skye, the countryside surrounding Inverness, and Edinburgh. Along the way, we met up with our friend Owen, and his brother-in-law Tam.
Next we stopped at an overlook for “Kilt Rock”, so named because the basalt pillars in the face of the cliff remind people of the pleats in a kilt.

Next we stopped at Lealt Gorge, which was cut into the underlying rock by a waterfall on the River Lealt. It also offers a beautiful view of the sea peaking through the gorge, with mainland Scotland on the horizon.

Today we did a driving tour around the Trotternish peninsula, on the north end of the Isle of Skye. First stop: “The Old Man of Storr”, a local landmark, and the pillar-like protrusion of rock behind the power lines in the image below.

Finally, we trekked back to Redwood House and down its two mile long, sheep infested, single track driveway for a well deserved nap.

Next we had a lunch stop at “The Oyster Shed”, a permanently parked food truck that specialized in oysters, scallops, shrimp, mussels, and other shellfish. It’s appearance is modest, but the food was fantastic! (Carbost, Scotland, United Kingdom)

Today we drove around the west side of the Isle of Skye, starting with Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home of Clan MacLeod. They claim it is the longest continuously occupied castle in the UK.

I’m laying in bed, resting after this long travel day. Iona to Skye is a loooong drive. But our hotel is lovely, and we won’t have to move for three days! (Edinbain, Scotland, United Kingdom)
